Audition Codes

Here are the audition codes for the 2009-2010 school year. Use this new number to clearly mark all auditions being submitted for festivals during the 2009-2010 school year. Do NOT use the initials for your school on the audition discs, CDs, or cassettes.

If you do not find your school’s name on this list, email the Executive Consultant so a number can be assigned to your school. - posted 30 July, 2008 updated 24 September, 2009

Important Reminder for all preparing auditions:
Students are each to announce " I am violin number 1" (or the appropriate instrument and audition number) at the beginning of their audition. They must never announce their school or their name. The number they say is the order in which their audition appears on the CD. It must also match the online form that was submitted. This helps us to be sure we are hearing the auditionee we think we are hearing. The second student on the CD would say "I am violin number 2" and so on. Remember, all violins go on one disc, all violas go on one disc, all 'cellos go on one disc....

BE SURE TO READ ALL INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE AUDITIONS PAGE BEFORE YOU START TO RECORD WITH YOUR STUDENTS!

Repertoire

Elgar: "Serenade for Strings in E minor"
Britten: "Simple Symphony"
Doyle: Harry at Hogwarts, (Themes from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire)"

You will find attached a pdf of part assignments for SHO. It is important to note for each of your students whether they are assigned to A or B part as there will be a number of divisi sections for which A plays the higher of the two notes and B plays the lower of the 2 notes.

Every effort has been made to put strength into every stand. Very strong players have also been assigned to the front desks of the second violin section where they can truly be leaders.

If it is necessary to replace a player with an alternate, every effort will be made not to switch A and B parts for the remaining players. Alternates should learn B parts.

ACCESSING MUSIC

You will receive an invitation to access SHO music from Box.net Please go to the site soon and download the parts you need for your students.

Music will NOT be sent to you in the post. It has been purchased, the guest conductors have added bowings as they have seen fit, and it has then been scanned by Darrell Townshend so you can access it immediately for your students.

We hope this will be an easy way to get the music to you now for rehearsals before Christmas break. We realize with such early dates for this year's festival that you'll need to get right to work.

If you do not receive an invitation to box.net in the next 24 hours, please let Georgia know!

Audition Results

The orchestra audition committee has spent three days listening to the auditions for both the AMIS Junior and Senior Honor Orchestras.

You should know some of the facts about the auditions as they have a bearing on the results. The venues for this year's festivals are considerably smaller than the facilities we all experienced last year in Singapore. After having a year when each orchestra numbered over 100 players, we are back to our usual size of approximately 70 students in each orchestra. This means that many students who were members of last year's groups were not successful in this year's auditions. Competition was sharp in all sections, but the calibre of the senior cellos was especially outstanding.

There were auditions received from a total of 40 schools.
In the JHO there were 220 total applicants with 137 violins, 22 violas, 51 cellos and 10 basses from which to select an orchestra of 36 violins, 14 violas, 14 cellos and 8 basses.

In the SHO there were 179 total applicants with 99 violins, 29 violas, 40 cellos, and 11 basses from which to select and orchestra of 36 violins, 14 violas, 14 cellos and 8 basses.

In the JHO auditions, the first 2 scales were marked out of 5 points and the third scale out of 3 points. The piece was marked out of 10 points.

In the SHO auditions the scales were all marked out of 5 points and the piece was marked out of 10 points.

For each section those selected for participation are marked as Y. There are alternates selected for each section. They will be admitted in order should any of the selected participants be unable to accept a spot in the orchestra.

Each participant, including alternates, will need to accept his or her position within the group no later than November 5th. Teachers should list all acceptances or non-acceptances (including alternates) in the online database, using the same password they used for entering initial audition information.

Soon sample auditions will be placed on the AMIS web site so that teachers and students can see the level of the playing that gained acceptance into this year's festivals. Band teachers found it very helpful to have such examples available, and string teachers asked for similar examples to be posted this year.

Music for both JHO and SHO has been purchased and the bowings have been added by this year's conductors. This music will be posted on a special box.net site. Teachers whose students have been accepted into the orchestras will be invited to download the appropriate parts from the site and duplicate them if necessary for their students. The original music will be taken to the festival site, but this method will allow teachers immediate access to the music, so they can start working with their students right away.

The part and chair assignments will be made after acceptances are received.
