AMIS Music Educators' Conference - Curriculum, Assessment and Pedagogy in the Music Classroom
The Association for Music in International Schools will offer its first annual professional development conference for music educators on 18-19 November 2011 at The American School in London. Plenary sessions, small-group workshops, open rehearsals and guided discussions on topics relevant to those pursuing best practice in music education are planned for teachers attending the workshop. Participants will explore current approaches to designing curricula that develop musical craft and understanding, and will examine assessment methods that authentically measure the learning that takes place in the arts. The program will also include workshops on methodologies specific to middle and high school ensemble instruction, including instrumental and vocal techniques. At the conclusion of the conference, teachers should leave with practical tools to use in their music classes, as well as clear frameworks for engaging in the development of curriculum and assessment.

The Association for Music in International Schools is once again pleased to offer a special two and a half day workshop for students and teachers involved with the IB Music diploma program. This is a collaborative effort among students and teachers from several international schools. This year the workshop will take place at The International School of Brussels (ISB) from Thursday, October 13th through Saturday, October 15th.
Comments from previous workshop participants include, "This was one of my best professional development workshops" (teacher) and "This workshop probably raised my IB Music mark by at least a point" (student).
Second year students are expected to bring works in progress (composition, research and performance). First-year students are encouraged to bring works in progress. The workshop focuses on collaborative peer and teacher assessment. Adult participants include composers, performers, teachers and examiners. The workshop gives students an excellent opportunity to get feedback and critique of their works.
Some of the features of the workshop will again include:
- Format for student performances (group or solo) on any instrument or voice including opportunities for feedback and critique from professional teachers and student peers.
- Opportunity to record a live culminating performance in fulfillment of one's IB Music requirement.
- Composition / creating projects (drafts and ideas) sharing and feedback from professional composers and examiners.
- Strategies for the study of the required works.
- Sessions on the development of study skills for Western and non-Western Music including sessions on the Music Investigation.
